Booking Through Thursday: Monogamy

One book at a time? Or more than one? If more, are they different types/genres? Or similar?

(We’re talking recreational reading, here — books for work or school don’t really count since they’re not optional.)

It’s a rare event for me to be reading only one book. I almost always have two on the go - or even three or four or more! Though anything over three does make it challenging; it’s hard to find the time to keep up with all of them at once and remember what’s happened in each one. Often one will be kept in my bag for the train, and the other (or another) on the couch for the evenings. I think it’s a mark of impatience - I just can’t wait to begin that next book. My current reads are generally varied since my TBR pile is; that way, I have a few different things to choose from, depending on what I feel like reading.

  1. I always have several on the go, but only ever one novel. That way I feel I'm less likely to be confused.

  2. Right now I have 5 going!! One is a YA, 2 are fiction, and 2 are non-fiction. This is actually more than normal, but I'm not much of a non-fiction reader. To have 2 of those going at once is almost unheard of for me!

    Happy Thursday!

  3. I'm the opposite. One book at a time for me. I don't think I could get into a book if I was reading more than one.

  4. In Cold Blood is a great book. I was surprised how much I liked it. Happy BTT!

  5. I can only do one book at a time. I've always wanted to read the Unbearable Lightness of Being. Happy BTT!

  6. And what interesting books you read! I may have to re-read Unbearable Lightness of Being - it's such a beautiful book. I re-read In Cold Blood last year, after seeing Capote. I'd forgotten the way he recreated an entire place and time - and the way he made all the characters come alive.
    I'm a polygamous reader, too

  7. I usually have several going at once, but the heat is totally ruining my ability to balance things. Send me some of that cool Australian air, would ya?

  8. I agree anything over three makes it challenging.
    Happy BTT

  9. as long as they're in different genres, I can handle up to about 5 books at once. right now, I'm reading 5: a non-fic about book collecting, a non-fic about Iran-US relations, a historical fic, a mystery, and I'm listening to a classic on CD!

of course, sometimes one of the books I'm reading leaps out at me and makes me ignore everything else. :)

  10. CGP, Eva: I seem to have no trouble reading books from the same gene at the same time, though my TBR pile is too varied for it to happen often. Perhaps I'm just naturally scatterbrained!

Stephanie: I always mean to read more non-fiction, but all these wonderful challenges keep distracting me!

Trisha, Smariek: See above about "naturally scatterbrained"! The Unbearable Lightness of Being really is worth reading; it provides so much food for thought that it will probably justify the one-book stance.

Kristy, Gracie: The Capote is great; the descriptions make it so easy to picture what he's writing about.

Bookfool: Cool air? What's that? It's been mid-twenties here for days! (Which does not bode well for summer.)

Dawn: It is, but I doubt that will stop me trying!

  12. I'm a one book at a time woman myself. I sometimes will juggle two at a time, but it's rare. I get so wrapped up in the book I'm reading that I hate to interupt it by reading another book at the same time.
